Getting home for Christmas

I turned up to the airport in Toronto last Saturday, ready to go home and celebrate Christmas only to be told the flight had been cancelled because of the bad weather in England affecting Heathrow. I didn't mind too much as I thought it would be simple to get a flight the next day but it turned out that Heathrow was closed for almost three days and all the flights from Toronto to Heathrow were cancelled meaning there were huge amounts of angry people trying to book new flights to get home before Christmas. It was a nightmare. I really didn't think I was getting home before the 25th. I managed to book another flight home after being on hold for three hours! but this flight wasn't until the 23rd of December and more snow was forecast. I ended up turning up on the Monday morning and waiting from 4am in the morning on standby. The first two flights during the day were cancelled and the last flight was at 8pm. There were about 8 people on standby, I really didn't think I was getting onto that flight. We all watched as masses of people boarded the plane, it seemed there would not be any left-over seats. The other 7 passengers were business men that had had their flight cancelled that morning, they begun shouting at the steward, demanding to be let on the plane. They offered obscene amounts of money. I stood quietly waiting for a chance to talk to the steward, he turned to us and told us he had one seat left. He turned to the men and said " I'll tell you what I see before me, I see a group of men that have been shouting and agressive, and I see a young lady that has been waiting here patiently, now are you going to be gentlemen and let her on the flight?" They mumbled and he turned to me and booked me on the flight! I was so happy I couldn't believe it, I held onto the ticket so tight as I thought someone would suddenly run up and steal it.

And now I'm home, and have had a lovely Christmas with my boyfriend and family. I'm so lucky to be home, I know there are many students in America and Canada that didn't make it home for christmas which makes me appreciate it even more. I have eaten far too much food, and have starting knitting a scarf for my boyfriend which I will post pictures of later. I hope everyone is having a lovely christmas.
