The last picture is quite blurry, but it's just to illustrate how high up I am, I'm on the 23rd floor! The elevators (lifts) here are very worrying, when the doors open then lift is generally still moving and you have to wait for it to stop! also the doors close on people and sometimes you just see a lift open with no lights on and no one inside. Creepy!
Toronto is not very pretty, but the architecture is amazing. Everything is very tall! The university library is 13 stories high, which when you are used to Bristol university library which is 3 stories high is pretty mind-boggling!
Phrases I have picked up:
- That Sucks!
- This is Sucky (the word Suck is used in many different formats)
- Awesome!
- Abooot (About but with a canadian accent, sort of a weird elongated ou sound)
- Loonies ( 1 dollar coin)
- Twonies (2 dollar coin)
- Street meat (hot dogs stalls on the sidewalk)
- School (Canadian word for Uni)
- right? ( said at the end of every sentence)
I will think of more :) People here regularly come up to me and say "oh my god, I love you accent!" and "are you British, that is so cool!" They then preceed to tell me how their mother's cousins's friends aunt is also from Britain and do I know them!
Things I have learnt about Canada:
- Vancouver hates Calgery, Calgery hates Toronto, Toronto hate Ottowa, Ottowa hates Montreal and Montreal hates Canada.
- They are ashamed that Justin Bieber is Canadian
- Ottowa is regarded as the most boring city in Canada, even though it is the capital.
- Canadians are very patriotic when abroad "NO I AM NOT AMERICAN" most sew little canadian flags onto their backpacks. When in Canada most Canadians moan a lot about how much they hate Canada.
- Jim Carey is Canadian
- Tim Hortons is better than Starbucks! and cheaper!
- Everyone is toronto supports the Maple Leafs even though they suck!
- Contrary to popular belief it is not constantly snowing here and bears do not roam the streets at night.
- Jay-walking is illegal
- The subway is tiny compared to London's tube, but most Torontonians find it confusing and complicated.
- People in my residence cannot be bothered to walk the 15 mins to uni, they get the subway!
I am having a great time here. Hopefully I will post more pictures soon, I am going picture mad now I have my camera :)
